Beware of combined MMR without consentadded 11th February 2008
If you are contemplating having, are having or have had single
component Measles, Mumps and Rubella please be aware of NHS practices
giving your child combined MMR when they are called to the surgery for
another vaccine.
In the last three weeks
we have had three parents from different parts of the country who
despite having told their NHS GPs and practice nurses that their child
would not be having MMR they were given the vaccination without consent
or knowledge. None of the parents were told that their children were
given combined MMR until after the event.
We advise that when you take your child to surgery to see the practice nurse, health visitor or GP for any vaccination:
- Ask what vaccination the clinician is about to give (keep hold of your child until you are satisfied which vaccine it is)
- Verbally state you do not want combined MMR
- Ask
the clinician to update your child's NHS record there and then to show
you do not want combined MMR (if you haven't already done so)
- Give
the clinician the doctor notification letter from WellCare (if you have
started or had a course of single vaccinations and haven't already done
so)
- Show the clinician the WellCare entry in
the Red Book for the single MMR vaccinations given - again ask for the
NHS record to be updated there and then if not already done so
- Ask to see the vaccine vial that the clinician has drawn up to be satisfied it is not combined MMR
