Is there a Male Menopause?

What are the symptoms and can anything be done about it?

Many believe there is a male menopause, but unlike the female variety, which occurs over 2-3 years, the male menopause is a gradual decline in testosterone production from the late thirties onwards.

Lack of erections is a clear indication that all is not as it should be. WellCare's programme of assessment, advice and treatments (including tablets such as Cialis, Viagra and Levitra, gels and injections) for male impotence carry a success rate of over 92%. But is there more to it?

In addition to a lack of sex drive or loss of libido there are other symptoms attributable to a declining testosterone level such as

  • tiredness
  • low mood
  • lack of energy
  • muscle weakness
  • aching and reduced cognitive ability (memory)

Lack of erections can lead to lack of sex drive and this in turn can lead to depression and disappointment not only in your performance but also in your relationship. So where treatments like Viagra or Cialis can improve erections what can be done to improve sex drive? Improvements in hormone treatment by using testosterone patches, skin gels, injections and testosterone implants has made us review our approach.

WellCare believes that if you feel that your sex drive is declining, it is worth considering a blood test to check on the testosterone level and, if this is below average it may well be worth trying testosterone gel or injections. They are likely to improve your general strength and well being as well as your libido and erections.

If the sex drive is reduced then the WellCare Androgen Profile blood test to check on the level of testosterone is recommended. If the testosterone level is below average then testosterone gel, patches or injections are worth considering.

The laboratory normal range for testosterone is 11-33 nmol/L. This is the range for 90% of men but this includes older men who have a fall in their levels. Younger men have levels in the 20-33 range. If the testosterone level is below 18 nmol/L we recommend treatment to boost the level of testosterone.

Your WellCare consulting doctor will be able to offer treatment in the form of gel, patches, and injections as well as helping you to evaluate other areas of your life and advise you on making adjustments in them.
