WellCare Vasectomy Service

At WellCare we aim to provide a vasectomy service that uses one of the region's most experienced vasectomy surgeons, with the support of WellCare GPs who are skilled in post-operative vasectomy care. Together with our clinicians WellCare can offer you a discreet and efficient service, with appointments within two to four weeks.

WellCare’s vasectomy surgeon is Dr John New, a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and a GP surgeon who performs vasectomies for the local Primary Care Trusts in the Bath and Wiltshire regions. Dr New is one of the most experienced vasectomy surgeons in the region having carried out over 1,000 vasectomies.

The surgery takes place in WellCare’s purpose built minor surgery theatre at 8 Monmouth Place, Bath.

The vasectomy process is in 3 parts

  1. Initial consultation, counselling and assessment with a WellCare doctor
  2. The procedure
  3. After care including up to 4 semen analyses and a report after each analysis from surgeon

The Initial Consultation

Before you attend for the initial consultation you will have been sent a pre-visit questionnaire. This questionnaire will be used as the basis for the consultation with the doctor (our doctors are experienced in pre-operation counselling and post-operative after care) to discuss the vasectomy and how it will affect your life. At this consultation and assessment you will have an opportunity to ask the doctor questions about the procedure, any side effects and after care. (Your partner is welcome to attend all or any stage of the process). We do not recommend that you have your vasectomy that day as it is important to reflect on the counselling received at the consultation and to discuss it with your partner (if appropriate).

The Procedure

Vasectomy diagram The procedure itself takes place a week or two later. (Prior to attending for surgery you will have shaved). You will first meet with WellCare’s practice/theatre nurse Debbie Cunningham who will check your blood pressure and prepare you for the surgeon, Dr John New FRCS. Dr New will then meet with you and answer any further questions that you (or your partner) may have. You will then be asked to sign a consent form for the vasectomy to be carried out. (If possible, Dr New will have called you the evening before your procedure to introduce himself).

The surgery is then carried out under local anaesthetic in the theatre. The procedure takes around half an hour.

Before you leave WellCare you will be given two sterile sample containers and instructions on how to collect your semen for analysis.

After Care

Your surgeon will discuss aftercare with you and give you a patient information leaflet with advice following your operation.

You will need to collect a sample of your semen for analysing on at least two occasions and send it direct to the laboratory to see if there are still any sperm left in the tubes. The first test is usually about 16 weeks after your operation and the second generally follows eight weeks after the first test. After each test your surgeon will write to you stating if the sample is clear.

Your WellCare surgeon and WellCare GPs are available to discuss any post operative concerns you may have. Simply call 01225 312040 and our patient service advisors will arrange for one of the doctors to speak with you.
